Program description
The CMA program is a state-aligned curriculum covering medication administration, documentation, safety protocols, resident rights, and the legal scope of practice for medication aides in personal care and long-term care settings.
Classroom
Pharmacology basics, the six rights of medication administration, abbreviations, and routes.
Skills Lab
Hands-on practice with oral, topical, ophthalmic, otic, and inhaled medications.
Clinical
Supervised on-site administration in a licensed care home with a registered nurse preceptor.
Student qualifications
To enroll in the Certified Medication Aide program, applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Hold a current Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) certification in good standing, or equivalent direct-care experience as approved.
- Pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
- Provide proof of a recent physical exam, current immunizations, and negative TB screening.
- Demonstrate ability to read, write, perform basic math, and communicate in English.
- Complete program orientation and sign the student conduct agreement.
Certification
Upon successful completion of classroom hours, skills evaluation, and clinical practicum, students receive a Certificate of Completion and are eligible to sit for the state Medication Aide certification examination. Graduates join a growing network of Star caregivers serving families across our community.
